FRESNO, CA — Fuego U23 opened its Fall campaign with a 2–1 victory over Academica on Sunday night at Blackbeard’s Family Entertainment Center.

The match served as Fuego’s Back to School Night, bringing families and young players to Blackbeard’s while giving the club an opportunity to showcase its U23 program. Fuego partner Mazda was also in attendance to support the team.
\n\n
The season opener also highlighted Fuego’s player development pathway. Four players recently moved up from the U19 roster to the U23 team, with Christian Sanchez earning a starting position and making an immediate impact in his first appearance at the U23 level.

Fuego took the lead in the ninth minute after Academica made a defensive mistake. A header played back toward the goalkeeper created an opportunity for Andres Garcia-Diaz, who reacted quickly to win the loose ball and finish to give Fuego a 1–0 advantage.
\n\n
In the 19th minute, Garcia-Diaz was involved again and carried the ball forward and created a 1v1 opportunity for David Valencia down the right side. Valencia used his technical ability to beat the defender before finishing at the near post to double Fuego’s lead.

Fuego entered halftime with a 2–0 advantage.
\n\n

Academica changed its approach coming out of halftime, playing with a much higher defensive line and pushing its goalkeeper farther up the field. The adjustment created space for Fuego to attack behind the defense, and Fuego had several opportunities to extend its lead. The team continued to move forward and create chances but was unable to find a third goal.
\n\n
As the match progressed, Academica remained within striking distance. Fuego also began to make a few defensive mistakes, eventually allowing Academica to cut the deficit to 2–1.

The final stages became a test of Fuego’s ability to manage the game and protect its lead.
\n\n
With the experience of center back Steven Randall helping organize the defense, Fuego managed to hold off Academica and secure the 2–1 victory to receive the full three points.
\n\n
We also wanted to give an honorable mention to the promotion of four U19 players moving into the U23 roster provides which gave those players an opportunity to continue developing while competing at a higher level.
\n\n
Fuego will now look to build on its opening-night victory when it returns to Blackbeard’s this weekend.

The 2026 edition will mark Fuego FC's second appearance in the competition after making its international debut at the 2025 Americas Winners Cup in El Salvador. Competing against some of the top beach soccer clubs in the region, Fuego FC reached the quarterfinals in its first-ever appearance and established itself as a competitive presence on the international stage.

The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), a 100% member-owned organization, is proud to announce that Central Valley Fuego Fútbol Club has joined the league. The club has already joined the league as a member and will begin play in the 2027 season.\n\n

“Fuego FC is an incredible addition to our league,” NPSL Managing Director Cindy Spera said. “Along with their success on the field, the Fuego FC management team is aligned with the business philosophy of the NPSL with regards to club ownership and member-driven governance.  We welcome them to the league as a competitive team and a strong business partner.”\n\n

The team is led by Club President Brian Easler, Co-Founder Alfredo Guzman, Managing Partner Angel Ruelas, and General Manager Juan Gerardo Ruelas Jr.\n\n

Easler joined Fuego FC in 2025, bringing extensive experience in business development, sales, strategic partnerships, technology, beach soccer, and sports program development. His focus on sustainable growth, revenue generation, and expanding opportunities throughout the Central Valley has made him a driving force behind the club’s long-term vision and continued evolution.\n\n

“We chose to join the NPSL because we believe the league is moving in a direction that aligns with what we have been looking for since we first began this journey in 2019: a league built for its clubs,” Easler said. “For us, this was never just about finding a place to play games.  It was about finding a group of like-minded clubs that believe in building something together, sharing in the upside of that growth, and creating a structure where clubs are not just participants, but real stakeholders in the future of the league.”\n\n

Guzman, known throughout the community as the “Godfather of Fuego,” is one of the founding figures behind Central Valley Fuego FC.  More than two decades ago, Guzman helped lay the foundation for what the club would become, and he continues to play an important role in its growth, direction, and connection to the local soccer community.\n\n

Angel Ruelas is a local real estate investor, developer, and former professional soccer player. Having played under USMNT legend Jermaine Jones, Angel brings a player’s perspective, competitive mentality, and deep understanding of the game to the club’s leadership group.  In his current role, Angel oversees the day-to-day management of the club on behalf of the Ruelas family, helping guide operations, player-facing decisions, and the continued development of the club’s vision.\n\n

Juan Gerardo Ruelas Jr. previously served as the club’s Managing Partner during its professional era.  A software engineer, real estate investor, and strategic operator, Juan has played a key role in shaping the club’s long-term infrastructure vision. He has been directly involved in the club’s major asset acquisitions, facility planning, and organizational development, while also helping recruit and build out key leadership positions across the club.\n\n

Founded in 2002, Fresno Fuego began as a PDL club and quickly established itself as one of the region’s most recognizable soccer brands.  Through strong performances in the U.S. Open Cup, the club earned opportunities to compete against some of the nation’s top teams.  In 2022, Fuego entered the professional ranks at the USSF third-division level, marking a major milestone in the club’s evolution.\n\n

During its professional era, the club competed for multiple seasons and was led at different points by respected figures in American soccer, including Martin Vasquez and Jermaine Jones.  Following that chapter, the organization restructured with a broader long-term vision: to become a comprehensive sports and development ecosystem for the Central Valley. Today, Fuego operates U-23, U-19, U-15, women’s, beach soccer, youth soccer, and pro-am basketball programs, all designed to create meaningful opportunities for athletes throughout the region. The club’s philosophy is rooted in player development, community engagement, and sustainable growth.  Fuego’s mission extends beyond fielding teams; it is about building infrastructure, creating pathways, and developing a sports ecosystem that can serve players, families, and communities across the Central Valley for generations to come.\n\n

“The NPSL has credibility, history, and strong competition, but what excites us most is the opportunity to be part of a league that can grow with its clubs, not just around them,” Easler said. “For Fuego FC this represents more than a league move. The club will return with a strong core of players from last year's championship-winning roster while also adding several new faces to strengthen the squad. The combination of returning experience and fresh talent gives the team confidence as it pursues back-to-back titles in 2026.\n\n

Since launching the basketball program, Fuego's objective has been about more than simply competing on the court. The program was created as part of the organization's broader vision to build a multi-sport ecosystem that creates opportunities for athletes, engages the community, and expands the Fuego brand throughout the Central Valley.\n\n

As the organization continues to grow, basketball has become an important piece of that vision. The club remains committed to investing in quality programming, creating competitive opportunities for local athletes, and establishing a culture that reflects the standards Fuego has built across its various sports initiatives.\n\n

The Fresno Pro-Am continues to serve as one of the region's premier summer basketball competitions, bringing together talented players from diverse backgrounds, including former collegiate athletes, current college players, and experienced local talent. Through structured training sessions led by Fuego staff, players will work on ball control, coordination, confidence, movement, and overall comfort within the game.\n\n

The goal of the program is not only to develop players technically, but also to continue creating more opportunities for girls within soccer locally. With more than a decade of high-level playing, coaching, and basketball operations experience, Crawley brings championship credibility, operational discipline, and deep regional ties to the role.\n\n

As a player, Crawley captured a Junior College State Championship in 2012 and earned NCAA Division II All-Conference honors. His competitive foundation shaped a leadership philosophy centered on accountability, preparation, and long-term player growth.\n\n

Transitioning into coaching and basketball operations, Crawley has served as Head Coach at Clovis High School, Buchanan High School, and San Joaquin Memorial. At the grassroots and elite levels, he has led as AAU Head Coach for Jalen Green Elite CV (16U and 17U), building programs that emphasize structure, development, and competitive excellence.\n\n

Crawley is also the Founder & CEO of Crawley Elite Training, a basketball development academy he has led for eight (8) years. Through his academy, he has trained more than 200 athletes across youth, high school, collegiate, and professional levels. His network includes 25 current professional players and 50 current collegiate athletes, demonstrating a proven track record of preparing players for advancement both on and off the court.\n\n

At the semi-professional level, Crawley has served as a two-time Fresno Pro-Am Championship Head Coach, further reinforcing his ability to construct competitive rosters and sustain winning cultures.\n\n

The Winter Combine will take place on Sunday, December 28, and will serve as a critical evaluation opportunity for players aspiring to compete within the Fuego FC pathway. The event reinforces the club’s ongoing commitment to developing high-level talent and providing clear opportunities for advancement at both the men’s and women’s levels.\n\n

The Women’s Combine will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Men’s Combine at 1:30 p.m. Both sessions will be staffed by Fuego FC technical leadership, coaching staff, and evaluators responsible for roster construction across Senior, U23, and U19 levels.\n\n

Players will be assessed on technical ability, tactical awareness, physical readiness, and overall game understanding within a competitive environment. Outstanding performers may be invited into Fuego FC training environments, extended evaluations, or future roster consideration for the upcoming competitive cycle.\n\n

On April 12th, Fuego FC and global music icon Rauw Alejandro came together for a powerful day of purpose and connection at Valley State Prison. This wasn’t just a visit, it was a statement. A message that community, compassion, and second chances matter.\n\n

The day began with a guided tour of the prison’s rehabilitation programs. Both Fuego FC and Rauw’s team witnessed firsthand the transformative initiatives at work vocational training, educational courses, and personal development opportunities that empower inmates to rewrite their futures. It was a moving reminder that redemption is always within reach.\n\n

Following the tour, guests engaged in heartfelt conversations with incarcerated individuals, sharing stories, struggles, and growth. A few inmates showcased talents developed behind bars, from music and poetry to entrepreneurial ideas—proof that even within the walls, inspiration thrives.\n\n

Then it was time to take the field. Inmates had spent weeks preparing the prison yard’s soccer pitch for this moment, and their pride was palpable. A select squad of inmates took to the field while hundreds watched from the sidelines, creating a buzzing atmosphere of anticipation and energy. With Fuego FC’s U-23 players stepping in as coaches (ahead of their own match the next day), the game was competitive, spirited, and unforgettable.\n\n

Despite a scheduled performance the following night in Fresno, Rauw Alejandro couldn’t resist joining the match. Just minutes in, he took a hard bump from one of the inmate players, a true “welcome to the pitch” moment. But he played on with passion and eventually scored a goal, drawing cheers from every corner of the yard.\n\n

After the final whistle, the celebration continued with a community BBQ. There were no barriers, just people sharing food, stories, and laughter. Autographs were signed, memories were made, and bonds were built. The day closed with stirring words from formerly incarcerated individuals who had rebuilt their lives, leaving the current population with hope and vision.\n\n

As a final gesture of unity, Rauw invited the Fuego FC U23 squad to join him backstage at his Cosa Nuestra Tour stop in Fresno following their home game—a well-earned celebration capping off a day that was far more than a game.\n\n

Prior to joining Fuego FC, Mario held various roles within football operations, including with the Fresno State Women's Soccer team amongst other local products, accumulating years of experience in team administration and logistics. In his current role as Head Coach of the Fuego Academy & Fuego U23 program, Aguilera oversees the comprehensive growth of young athletes, ensuring they realize their full potential both technically and tactically. Before joining Fuego FC, he honed his coaching expertise at California Odyssey SC, and as an assistant coach at Fresno City College. His proven ability to mentor players and assemble competitive teams has earned him wide respect within the soccer community.\n

Aguilera’s distinguished playing background further enhances his credibility. A 1997 College All-American, he also represented the United States in Mexico, garnering accolades for his outstanding performances and receiving an award from the Vice President of Mexico in 1998. Professionally, he competed in the A-League with the California Jaguars (2000–2004) and the USL PDL (now known as USL-2) with Fresno Fuego (2007 & 2010). At this time we will be fielding Fuego U23, ensuring the continuity of our Club’s presence and commitment to player development.
As part of our broader plan, we also anticipate affiliating with a new professional team based in the Central Valley. This step allows us the flexibility to focus on strengthening our infrastructure and enhancing the overall experience for our players, fans, and community. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to sharing further details.
This decision reflects our commitment to delivering an enhanced, world-class soccer experience to our fans and the greater Central Valley community.
